Why We Love it
–Breguet makes the best dials in the biz. Yeah, we said it.
Their signature engine-turned dials, individually numbered and hand-finished are simply beautiful works of art. Executed here in their core line, the Classique, this particular watch offers something a bit more special than your "run-of-the-mill" Breguet. In fact, it offers much more.
This is no simple dress watch, or even a “simple” perpetual calendar watch — rather, it’s a QP with an included equation-of-time function, a complication that shows the deviation from true solar time. Housed in a 36mm yellow gold case with a, this Reference 3477 features a smooth bezel, a coin-edge midcase, and a sapphire crystal, beneath which is a stunning silver guilloché dial with printed black ‘Roman’ numerals, a day window beneath 12 o’clock, an equation-of-time indicator at 1:30, a central month indicator, a power reserve indicator at 10:30, a leap year indicator at 8 o’clock, and a date indicator above 6 o’clock. A set of ‘Breguet’ hands rounds out the pocket watch-like, classical appearance.
Incredibly, all this information has ample room to “breathe” on the dial, with a design that doesn’t feel or appear crowded in the least. Flip the watch over, meanwhile, and you’re greeted with the scene of the superbly decorated, automatic Breguet Calibre 502 movement with skeletonized winding mass via a sapphire caseback. A brown leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a yellow gold deployant clasp finishes the packages.
Wildly complicated, stunningly finished, and completely understated, this Breguet Ref. 3477 is a timepiece for those in the know.

Brand Story
+However, these numerals and hands are but a single innovation in a long list of horological firsts devised by master watchmaker and inventor Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823), a Neuchatel-born savant whose Parisian career saw the advent of myriad watchmaking creations that we take for granted today. Indeed, it was Breguet who devised the first self-winding watches, as well as the first gongs for repeating watches and the tourbillon. Not many inventors can claim the king and queen of France as patrons, but indeed King Louis XVI and his bride Marie Antoinette were amongst his admirers.
20th-century Breguet is no less storied: The company’s Type 20 pilot’s chronograph issued to the French Aéronautique Militaire in the 1950s provided a benchmark for military watch design. Its stark black dial and utilitarian look belied the sophisticated retour en vol (“flyback”) mechanism within the movement, which allowed a pilot to stop, reset and start the chronograph by depressing the bottom pusher just once.
More recently, under the current management of Mark A. Hayek, modern Breguet has continued to register new patents and amass a dedicated following. The brand’s “Classique” dress watches from the 1990s and 2000s, for example, feature some of the most striking dials in modern watchmaking, making use of guilloché patterns, blue steeled hands and Roman numerals. While the company’s contemporary offerings continue to increase in sophistication and the number of complications available, it’s surely these simple, gorgeous time-only models that best encapsulate the elegant timepieces of A.L. Breguet himself.
