Why We Love it
–In the history of dive watches, a few names tend to stand out as pioneers and innovators: Rolex. DOXA. Blancpain.
The latter changed the world with its Fifty Fathoms, a timepiece that many consider — and rightfully so — to be the world's first true diver's watch. However, the Fifty Fathoms wasn't the only diver that the maison from La Brassus produced. There was also a scaled-down version called the Bathyscaphe, named after the manned submersible of the Swiss explorer-diver Auguste Piccard. More recently, Blancpain has revived the Bathyscaphe nomenclature, offering an entire line of sophisticated divers that pay homage to their vintage counterparts.Â
While vintage versions of this exceptional tool watch are personal favorites of ours, certain contemporary iterations are similarly some of the best modern luxury divers available. This limited-edition Fifty Fathoms for HODINKEE, for example — was released in 2018 and is simple in design, yet unquestionably high-end.
Housed in a 38mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a unidirectional, rotating timing bezel with a black ceramic insert, and a signed crown, it features a luminous matte black dial with ‘Arabic’ quadrant indices with a matching handset, and an outer, printed white minute track.
Powering this beauty is the Blancpain Calibre 1153 automatic movement with a silicon hairspring and an impressive 100 hours of power reserve, while completing the package is a signed, black 'sailcloth' textured strap with a signed, stainless steel pin buckle.
If you’re on the hunt for an exceptional dive watch but aren’t keen on the Sub or the Seamaster 300, we highly recommend giving this superlative timepiece a look.

Brand Story
+But Blancpain's other genius — and what has arguably ensured their legacy — is the entrant into the world of purpose-built tool watches, and the industry's prototypical modern diver's watch: the legendary Fifty Fathoms. The genesis of this legendary timepiece has its roots in post-World War II France, where Captain Bob Maloubier (previously of the Special Operations Executive) and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud were tasked with setting up the French combat diver commando unit. The two approached Blancpain in the pursuit of a specialized diver’s watch — the design of which Maloubier drew up himself — and the Fifty Fathoms was born.a
Later adopted by the militaries of Germany and the United States, the Fifty Fathoms now forms the core of Blancpain’s dive watch collection, having spawned myriad iterations over the years, including complicated and chronograph versions. It is the savoir faire necessary to produce such disparate products as an elegant gold moon phase and a steel combat diver’s watch that makes Blancpain such a fascinating company, and a compelling product to collect.
