Why We Love it
–Hi-tech materials such as ceramic and titanium are relatively common these days. What you don’t see often, however, are watches made of $20 gold pieces.
Corum, a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1955, has actually been making such watches for years. Whimsical and fun, they merge numismatics with horology in an enjoyable manner that feels far removed from the tacky gift shop watches of museum stores and catalogs.
This particular Corum timepiece is cased in a 1904 U.S. “Double Eagle” gold piece. Measuring 34mm in yellow gold with an acrylic crystal, a diamond-topped gold crown, and a decorated bezel machined from the coin’s milled edge, it features a black ‘stick’ handset and a 1904 ‘liberty’s head’ caseback — which is actually the obverse of this particular coin, the reverse being the dial.
Powered by an automatic ETA Caliber 2892-2 movement, the watch comes paired to a black alligator leather strap with a signed, 18K yellow gold pin buckle. Regardless of whether you’re a coin collector or not, there’s no doubt that this special offering from Corum makes for a unique timepiece — and one that’s almost certain to spark interesting party conversation.

Brand Story
+Perhaps the most well known of Corum’s collections, however, is the Heritage Coin, a design that uses a U.S. gold coin such as a ‘Double Eagle’ as a substitute for a traditional watch case. U.S. Presidents George Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton have all worn this special timepiece — as has artist Andy Warhol.
The Golden Bridge, meanwhile, dates to 1980. Arranged in a linear fashion, the watch’s movement forms both the caliber as well as the bulk of the ‘dial,’ which is visible via a unique sapphire crystal. It’s watches like these that have kept Corum in the mind of collectors searching for unique horological experiences for over 70 years and counting.
