Why We Love it
–You aren't seeing double - you're looking at a pair of Patek Philippe Gondolos!
This special His & Hers set dates back to the early 1960s, and comes to us from the children of the original owners - a husband and wife who gifted one another these incredible pieces in 1963 and 1964 as indicated by caseback engravings. When these lovely pieces came to us, we knew that each example on its own was something to behold, but together these pieces tell a personal story with unbelievable amount of vintage charm and romance — true timepiece soulmates that belong together, so we've opted to offer them as a single lot.
The ‘His’ Gondolo, a Reference 3430/001J, features a 26mm square 18k yellow gold square case fitted with a mineral crystal and a signed crown. Its unique guilloche hand-finished dial features a ti-tonal blend of yellow, white and rose gold paired with applied black stick indices, a black pencil handset and a ‘Beyer’ retailer signature at 6 o'clock. It comes fitted to a matching tri-tonal 18k hexagonal-link bracelet with a matching textured finish and a signed clasp. Powered by the maison's manual-winding Calibre 23-300, this exquisite piece was undoubtedly a special order produced for its original owner and features his name engraved on the caseback - 'Bernard R Ehrlich 1963'.
The smaller 'Hers' Gondolo is very much a downsized variant of the 3430. A Reference 3285/51, this example features a 16mm square 18k yellow gold case with signed crown housing a matching tri-tonal guilloche dial and features a miniaturized, integrated bracelet with a signed locking clasp. Equipped with a button-sized 20 jewel Calibre 13.5 manual-winding movement, this piece also features a caseback engraving - 'B.W.E. 1964' - a matching beauty for the better half, no question!
Both timepieces remain in outstanding condition throughout, showing light signs of wear from age and clearly occasional use. The 3430 comes with a Certificate of Origin from Patek Philippe, and the 3285 comes with service papers from Henri Stern, dated 1994, further establishing their provenance.
Both pieces individually exemplify the skill and craftsmanship Patek Philippe is able to employ in producing unique, hand-finished timepieces, and this set from the early 1960s not only stand out today with their unique blend of materials and textures, but as a set speak to the hopeless, incurable romantic in all of us.
The perfect vintage set for a horological power couple? We think so.
