Why We Love it

Girard-Perregaux has a rich tradition of excellence in watchmaking that is unfortunately often over-looked by vintage collectors, in part due to their contemporary "bleh" factor. Looking past their contemporary offerings, you'll find that their roots go back to the late 18th century, when Jean-François Bautte first opened his shop in La-Chaux-du-Fonds. In 1856, watchmaker Constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and established Girard-Perregaux et Cie.

Their history of innovation includes pioneering efforts in early wristwatches, and since their beginnings, the brand has filed for over 80 patents. In 1880, Girard-Perregaux manufactured a record 2000 wristwatches for the officers of the German Navy. GP was also responsible for invaluable contributions to the development of high-beat movements, some of which have bucked the trend and become quite collectable. The Gyromatic high frequency movement, produced in 1965, was the first to beat at a 36,000 vph. Additionally, Girard-Perregaux was also the first manufacture to produce a watch with a quartz movement, showing their aptitude at being ahead of the curve.

This particular watch is a handsome example of an oversized dress piece from the late 1950s. While its 21 Jewel high grade manual winding movement gives it some chops as a superlative bit of machinery, its tremendous design steals the show. Its case, though thin, feels substantial on the wrist. Sized at 38mm, this piece strikes a balance between casual and dress functionality. But the real stunner is the tapestry dial with large, Art Deco numerals. In near mint condition, this piece appears to have never been worn - which is perhaps the only thing this magnificent bit of Girard-Perregaux's history shares with its modern counterparts!
