Why We Love it
–When putting the appeal of the Heuer Carrera in words, one can often wax poetic on its beauty. True, it seems strange to use the word “beauty” in reference to a sports watch, but there is elegance in its austerity. More than anything, though, it’s simple, straightforward, timekeeping distilled to its essence.
And its simplicity is not a product of mere aesthetics.
From its inception it was designed to be the antithesis of chronographs as they were in the late 1950s and early 1960s. While most chronographs had the tachymeter scale printed on the dial, resulting in a cluttered appearance that made the chronograph difficult to read, the Carrera did away with all that. A new invention—a tension ring meant to secure to crystal to the case—introduced a new element of legibility.
Far from being a blank space, it became a place where vital information—in the case of this watch, a tachymeter—could be printed. While the Carrera didn’t go as far as the Omega Speedmaster, which took the tachymeter all the way to the bezel, the Carrera still cleaned up the dial in a remarkable way. This made doing its intended purpose—timing automobile races—much easier to do.
This resulted in a silhouette that was as distinctive as it was beautiful. The sharp lines of the lugs are carried through the dial to the angular hands and stick markers. While the chronograph registers are evenly spaced on any Carrera, it’s on two-register variants that truly reflect Jack Heuer’s design ethos.
This Carrera we offer here is a Reference 3647T, powered by the Valjoux 92, a variant of the Valjoux 72 that simply lacks an hour register. Patina to the luminescent elements softens the starkness of the silver dial, and offers a contrast to the red tachymeter ring. Moreover, according to this comprehensive breakdown from On the Dash, the low serial number and "hex" case back dates this Carrera to the first year of production, making it an exceptionally early example.
As an uncommonly seen variant of a classic chronograph, this Carrera proves truth in the saying “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
