Why We Love it

Few watchmaking maisons have the history, savoir-faire, and allure of Patek Philippe.

Since 1839, the Swiss firm has produced some of the most desirable timepieces in the world, and none more so than its complicated pocket and wristwatches. From the groundbreaking Reference 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph to the stunningly beautiful Reference 5531 world timer, Patek’s sophisticated creations have been evoking wonder for close two centuries.

In 2014, Patek released the Reference 5975, a vintage-inspired, multi-scale chronograph housed in a modern 40mm case. With pulsometer, telemeter, and tachymeter scales snaking their way around a beautiful dial, the 5975 clearly takes a page out of 1940s-style watchmaking — however, an automatic movement with vertical clutch and column wheel means that you get all the convenience of 21st-century horology, to boot.

This particular example, a Reference 5975J, is housed in a 40mm 18K yellow gold case with dual ‘paddle’ chronograph pushers, a signed crown, beautiful stepped lugs, and a sapphire crystal. Its silvered dial features applied yellow gold indices; telemeter, pulsometer, and tachymeter scales; and a yellow gold “feuille” handset. Unlike most conventional chronographs, it does not feature two or three time-recording registers — rather, the chronograph pushers control the central seconds hand, which is used to measure pulse, distance from a discrete event, speed, and more.

Powered by a modified, automatic version of the Patek Philippe Calibre 28-520 chronograph movement and paired to a signed, brown alligator leather strap with a yellow gold deployant clasp, the watch features an engraved caseback honoring the brand’s 175th anniversary in 2014. Limited to 400 pieces in yellow gold and accompanied by its factory goodies, it’s the perfect marriage of 20th-century aesthetics and modern horological prowess.

Few opportunities come along to own such a splendid piece. This is your chance!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
