Why We Love it

If you’re looking for something unique, a 1950s chronograph needs to be a consideration. Sure, these watches are pretty damned old, but the larger watches of that era were the templates for everything that came later, and well-preserved examples look stunning on the modern wrist.

Many of the earliest wristwatches don’t hold much appeal to collectors today, mainly due to the size and delicacy. While many of these watches were beautiful, case sizes close to 30mm are out of style, and waterproofing technology wasn’t all that good. Post WWII, the style and quality of men’s watches jumped forward, influenced by the military aesthetic and mechanically improved based on all that watchmakers learned by observing how their watches held up under the strains of combat.

Tissot is one of the oldest Swiss watch brands, and like many others during the mid-20th century, created different watches for different markets, based on the varying aesthetic preferences around the world. Scant information exists on this watch, but it was most likely sold in South America, and while we can’t be 100% certain, we have no reason to believe that this dial has ever been touched or refinished.

Black dial chronographs from the 1950s are quite rare, and the exceptional condition of this dial only increases the rarity. If you’re looking for a watch that you won’t find on every Tom, Dick and Harry’s wrists, this is it. Every man needs a dress watch, but not all of us like simple time only pieces. The gold case certainly dresses this Tissot up, and while we can’t speak for you, to us this watches is just begging to be worn with a sharply tailored suit or tux.

Complicated dials with tachymeter scales aren’t for everyone, but if you don’t love them you’re just wrong! We don’t get to offer black dialed 50s chrono in gold cases to our clients everyday, but when we do, we’re pretty excited about it. This Tissot is a beautiful watch that deserves to get snapped up quick.
