Why We Love it

The first Polerouter was released in 1954 to celebrate and promote Scandinavian Airlines’ Royal Viking polar flights between New York City, Los Angeles and Europe. The flights forged a new route over the North Pole, reducing flight times between the two continents. Flying over the North Pole presented a unique set of challenges for a watch, and the Polerouter was designed to be highly resistant to magnetic fields (in addition to the usual shock and water resistance) so as to maintain accuracy during the trip.

Polerouters are not especially rare watches in their own right, but are almost always seen in the original 35mm case with twisted lugs.  And while Gerald Genta's vision has become a truly important and collectible design, Polerouter disciples have turned their eyes to the 1970s when Universal Genève began producing new executions of their iconic line.

This particular Polerouter, hailing from the early 1970s, is a wonderfully playful expression.  The 36mm cushion case with flat, gently sloped lugs offers a lovely reframing of the dial, silver minute track and asymmetrical date window, all features that can be found on earlier, more common versions.  And with its large signed screw-down crown, the watch begins to take a new shape almost reminiscent of early 70s divers.  In addition to wearing exceptionally well, this example offers a stunning wrist presence with its matte blue dial and white printing, set off by the wide silver minute track.  Inside, the 28-jewel Universal Genève Micro-rotor movement hums happily, adding even more desirability to the detail-oriented horological palette.

Whether you're excited by sheer good looks or rarity, you can't miss with this gem from a by-gone era of of a highly revered and coveted manufacture.
