–Do It Yourself.
While many famous watches have been made using sourced, thirty-party movements and parts, the idea of an "in-house" calibre never ceases to pique the interest of the dedicated collector. There's something about the idea of vertical integration — about the effort and attention to detail that comes with making something oneself — that the watch world loves.
Bulova, established in New York City in 1875, was once at the forefront of both in-house manufacturing and of watchmaking more generally. Its Accutron tuning-fork movement set the stage for the quartz revolution as early as 1960, and its marketing efforts — particularly in the United States — were unrivaled. As said perhaps most famously in Mad Men, "Bulova — it's not a timepiece. It's a conversation piece." With its parts splayed across a full-color page, this Bulova ad from 1966 captures that sentiment beautifully.
This ad is custom framed in a 13" x 15 7/8”natural wood frame with a brown finish. It features a custom-measured, hand-cut 4-ply matte in cream, complimenting all the ad tones. Every material used is acid-free and the glass is anti-reflective and offers UV-protection to keep this precious ad preserved no matter where you decide to hang it up. Speaking of which, hanging your newly purchased ad is a seamless task, as this particular frame comes with an additional hanging wire and felt pads for wall protection.
The glory days of American watchmaking may be behind us, but several upstart young brands are at the forefront of a resurgence. Bulova was there at the beginning — celebrate its pioneering spirit with this beautiful ad!
