–Why We Love It
The Zodiac Seawolf is considered by many to be amongst the first purpose-built diving watches to ever be produced, alongside the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, DOXA Sub 300 and the Rolex Submariner.
This particular example was previously owned by Yuriy Vakulenko, author of "Collecting Vintage Zodiac Watches" and is quite simply one of the cleanest examples we've ever come across. Featuring a strong case, shockingly pristine gloss black dial with extremely well preserved Tritium indices and matching dauphine handset, we're in total awe. Perhaps most incredible is its distinctive blue acrylic bezel which remains in near-mint condition with perfect rotating action and no stress fractures to be seen.
With the Seawolf, Zodiac's approach was function-forward. These watches were built for a purpose and well used for that purpose, making an example in this condition truly special.
When compared to Fifty-Fathoms and Submariner models of the same vintage, you might say that the Seawolf is an undervalued bargain. We agree, and are delighted to have this incredible example offered for sale.
The StoryÂ
Zodiac is an old brand that's enjoying new life under new ownership. Fossil, its current owners, understand the tremendous staying power of classic designs such as the Seawolf. As far as the genuine article is concerned, vintage collectors are now seeing the value of these stunning and sporty watches.Â
With roots going back to the late 19th century, the brand that would come to be known as Zodiac distinguished itself from its earliest days with some impressive technical feats. They produced flat pocket watches in the 1920s, some of the industry's earliest automatic watches in the 1930s, and power-reserve complications in the 1940s. As the intention of Ariste Calame when founding Zodiac was to specialize in the production of complicated movements, it’s no surprise that the lineage of technical expertise would live on throughout the brand’s history.
