–Why We Love It
There are some Rolex enthusiasts who strictly collect vintage Submariners. And when we see an example like this, we can understand why.
The Submariner has a reputation that really can't be beat. It is arguably the most well known Rolex model, and everyone from James Bond to Martin Scorsese has worn one, for good reason.
The Rolex 1680 builds upon the already iconic Reference 5513, as the first model to feature a date function. Despite this minor change, the design language of the Submariner has largely remained unchanged over the years.
Condition-wise, well, the pictures speak for themselves. Housed within the 39mm Oyster Case is an original 'MK1 White' matte black dial. The tritium hands and markers are close to perfect, and the black bezel insert has lightly faded to a grey tone.
While the hottest date model Subs feature red script, we challenge you to find a 'White Sub' worth buying - that's right folks, these are the rarer ones!
The Story
The Reference 1680, released in 1966, deviated from previous iterations of the Submariner--such as the beloved ref. 5513--by including a date function. This change was remarkably divisive because, according the diehards, if you need to know the date while on a dive, you're kind of screwed.
Despite the divided opinions on the added functionality, it ticks all the boxes for a tool watch. A sturdy stainless steel case? Check. Robust movement that is dust-proof, shock-proof, and waterproof? Check, check, and check.
