The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 is the go to for many Submariner purists - the conventional wisdom being that if you need to know what day it is when you're under water... you have much bigger things to worry about!
Featuring a matte black Mk 1 Maxi dial with thick tritium plots, the dial is nearly flawless. A tritium handset perfectly matches the luminous plots on the dial. Dating to the late 1970s, this particular example is in remarkable condition. Looking at such a dial is like looking into the past to what the watch was like when it was first sold.
While the word 'iconic' is wildly overused these days - the Submariner is perhaps deserves the moniker more than any other.
The Story
The Reference 5513 is arguably one of the most desirable examples of Submariner out there. Produced from 1962 until 1989, the Reference 5513 is probably the longest-running model of Rolex ever. Following on the heels of the 5512, the 5513 was the second reference of Sub to feature crown guards.
However, due to the 5512’s relative rarity on the collector’s circuit, it’s the 5513 that has come to typify vintage no-date Subs in the minds of collectors.
Long viewed by collectors as the purest expression of Submariner, the 5513 is the last great no-date Sub. Although Rolex still makes Submariners without dates, the 5513 retains the smaller diameter (39mm) case and slimmer proportions that distinguish vintage Submariners from modern.
