Why We Love it
–Breitling’s milled-edge bezel and internal ‘slide-rule’ scale might be the brand’s single most recognizable feature.
But in 1985, Breitling introduced a new wave of watches dubbed the Aerospace featuring yet another signature design element the brand has become known for –– two LCD screens on the dial complimenting an innovative multi-function quartz chronograph movement.
Although the price has come up on neo-vintage examples, the Breitling Aerospace still offers up a ton of value.
This particular Breitling we have here, a Reference B-1 A68362, features some of the design elements that we just adore from the Aerospace, combined with a robust profile and an array of functions. It comes housed in a 43mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, and features a fully-graduated, steel, rotating timing bezel, ‘pill’ shaped chronograph pushers and a signed crown.
The luminous dial features oversized ‘Arabic’ cardinal hour numerals, a matching ‘sword’ handset and a dual-LCD negative display, which by the way, are night vision goggle compatible if you find yourself in the middle of an impromptu stealth mission. This piece also comes fitted with an A70174 steel bracelet that is equipped with an additional UTC module, a relatively new design cue from Breitling, and yet another eccentric visual trait added to the list.
There’s not much the Breitling Calibre 78 multi-function quartz movement can’t do. It packs in a host of features including two alarm functions, two time zones, a 24/12 hr display, a perpetual calendar, day/date/month display, night vision, 24 hr UTC mode, and of course, chronograph timers.
If you’ve been on the hunt for an indestructible, robust tool watch, then look no further than this Breitling B-1.
Brand Story

Brand Story
+The company first started manufacturing wrist chronographs as early as the 1930s. In 1936 they became an official supplier to military forces of the United Kingdom and Canada. While perhaps best known for the Navitimer and Chronomat lines — which were used heavily by pilots of many nations — Breitling also produced scores of other chronograph models that merit consideration, such as the more affordable Top Time and Premier. Dive watches, such as the Super Ocean, are also part of the company’s offerings.
The late 1970s was a turbulent time for the Swiss watch industry, and many storied houses were swept away by the Quartz Crisis. By 1978, Breitling was in trouble due to the illness of its leader, Willy Breitling, and the steep decline in sales that had cut through the entire industry. Unable to keep operations going, the company was liquidated, and parts, toolings and naming rights were sold off.
Between 1979 and 2017, Breitling continued under the ownership of the Schneider family. In 2017 an 80% stake in the firm was sold to a British private equity firm, with the remaining 20% sold in 2018. In 2019, the company released the caliber B01, an in-house, automatic chronograph movement that’s since found its way into the Chronomat and Navitimer collections, bringing the tale of this famed manufacturer full circle.
