Why We Love it
–Before the Quartz Crisis, Bulova had an obsession with precision. Almost from the founding of their plant in 1912, they implemented a system of mass production never before seen in the world of horology, which guaranteed an unprecedented interchangeability in their parts. This obsession with precision spurred them to produce the most accurate movement for a wristwatch. The aptly-named Accutron, with its tuning fork in lieu of the typical balance wheel, was the first ever electronic watch and is a legend in itself. However, the success and innovation of the Accutron overshadows the quality of some of the other products they produced during this period.
Bulova's watches from the 1960s and 1970s certainly have an engaging appeal. Their chronographs in particular capture the care and precision that Bulova’s employees exerted, even in the early days of the company. In fact, from 1927 the timing technicians in Bulova’s New York City workshop set the watches that they worked on according to readings from a chronograph up in the Observatory.
Though Bulova started producing wrist chronographs as early as the 1940s, those from the 1960s resonate the most with collectors today. The double register chronograph offered here is much more subdued in design than their most notable chronograph, the "Stars and Stripes." But at 35mm it’s an attractive size for both men and women, and it feels comfortable on the wrist.
The dial is an understated silver, reminiscent of that on a Heuer Carrera, with the dauphine hands give it an elegant touch. As the darling of budget-conscious collectors, Bulova has certainly earned its reputation for dependability. Pieces like this one prove that in form as well as function, Bulova spared no expense.
