Why We Love it
–The perpetual calendar is one of the most respected and legendary complications in the watch industry. Capable of accounting for leap years, months of varied sizes, and more, the perpetual calendar has always been respected for its complexity, and romanticism.
While any brand creating a perpetual calendar is an impressive feat, few ever reimagine the perpetual calendar; typically using a conventional multi-register layout, the perpetual calendar is rarely approached from a new lens.
That is, until we encounter F.P. Journe. F.P. Journe is a brand that rarely approaches anything with the word ‘conventional’. As you might not be surprised, Journe’s perpetual calendar pioneers a completely new approach to the complication. It’s not only unique in design, it’s unique in design to solve a practical purpose. When brands innovate on the design side in order to improve a practical component of a watch, that’s when designs are most successful.
In the case of the perpetual calendar, a common problem is the cluttering of information on the dial. With day, date, month, moonphase and sometimes year and moonphase all displayed together in sub registers, it’s extremely easy for a watch dial to fill up and the display to get dizzying or overpopulated.
Journe recognized this issue and presented the F.P. Journe Quantième Perpétuel. The Journe Quantième Perpétuel makes use of aperture displays to simplify the perpetual calendar layout into an easily readable and digestible package. The day and month are displayed at the top of the dial, while the date is set slightly larger at the bottom of the dial, power reserve at 9 o'clock, and leap year is featured in the center. While there’s lots of information displayed, the dial remains feeling extremely clean and legible.
This particular example is one of the most beautiful. Fashioned from 18K rose gold with a blue dial, this piece has a subtle contrast that makes it extremely reserved yet classy. Of all the iterations, this combination is a favorite in the office.
The Journe QP is powered by one of Journe’s automatic winding Octa movements, which further makes the case for this piece as an everyday F.P. Journe. Slim and compact on the wrist in spite of its grand complication status, this piece is a horological wonder, and lives at the intersection of perfect form and function.

F.P. Journe builds precision chronometers outfitted with cases from its own case maker, and dials from its own dial maker.
