Why We Love it
–Much like Cartier, Hermès is a brand that has historically been about design first, function second.
That being said, in recent years, the maison has shaken the watch world with not only new, modern, and original designs — but also with their push into developing their own movements in partnership with Vaucher.
One of the finest examples of the brand’s watchmaking savoir faire is this Arceau Toucan De Paradis, released as an edition of 24, in 2021.
This piece's party trick, it's stunning dial, is composed of over 500 individual threads, each hand-woven over an enamel dial, to form an image of a kaleidoscopic toucan. The dial itself, takes over a week for one of their skilled artisans to complete. This level of craftsmanship is typically only seen on 'holy trinity' pieces in the high six to seven figure price range!
Breath-taking.
The rest of this 38mm package doesn't disappoint. The 18K white bezel has some of the most elegant diamond-setting that we have come across. The lugs, true to the model's name, are reminiscent of a hoop you'd see on one of their legendary leather goods. The demure white gold 'feuille' handset serves as the perfect companion to the extravagant dial.
While many brands are stuck firmly in the past, reissuing streams of vintage-inspired fare, Hermès is heading boldly into the future of horological design.
We say: bravo!
Brand Story
+
Brand Story
+The maison began a furious push to vertically integrate in 2006, purchasing a 25% stake in movement maker Vaucher; this was followed by the purchase in 2012 of a dial manufacturer and a case maker in 2013. The results have been some of the most stunning timepieces of the past decade, including the gorgeous Slim d’Hermès with its unique, cut-out typeface, and the Arceau L’Heure De La Lune moonphase. From entry-level dress watches such as the Galop d’Hermès — designed by American industrial designer Ini Archibong — to GPHG-winning creations such as the Arceau Robe du Soir, the maison has more than proven its horological savoir faire.
