Why We Love it
–Seven Formula One World Championships—five back-to-back. The most Grand Prix wins, fastest laps, and the most races one in a single season. Arguably the greatest driver in Formula One history.
We mean, of course, Michael Schumacher.
A bricklayer’s son, Schumacher got his start in racing like many of his contemporaries—in kart racing. He won his first club championship at the age of six. Already one could see in the boy the racing legend he would become—in 1984 he won the German Junior Kart Championship, becoming European champion in 1987.
And in 1991, at the age of only 22, he made his Formula One debut at the Belgian Grand Prix. Though he had to retire from the race due to clutch problems, he managed to attract the attention of the Benton-Ford team. He would go on to race for them until 1996.
He won his first World Championship in 1994, in a season marred by controversy and haunted by the death of Ayrton Senna; he would win again in 1995.
In 1996, Schumacher signed with Ferrari; that same year, as a brand ambassador, he would reveal this watch: the Omega Speedmaster Schumacher.
Though we mostly associate the Speedmaster with its use by NASA, Omega intended it to be used as a racing watch. Throughout the years Omega has released special editions of Speedmaster that hearken back to its racing heritage. Since Schumacher is regarded by experts as the best driver in the history of Formula One racing, it’s natural, therefore, that many of these special editions would bear his name.
There have been several Schumacher Speedies, but this is one of the first, which was produced between 1996 and 1999. Available in either red or yellow dials (Ferrari colors), the Schumacher Speedy uses the case of the Omega Speedmaster Reduced. Though considered a polarizing choice by Speedmaster purists, we appreciate how the Reduced has a lower profile than the 42mm Moonwatch, making it easier to slip under a cuff.
But with that bright red dial, would you really want it to?
