When Omega announced the first #SpeedyTuesday edition Speedmaster in 2017, they proved that the brand was paying close attention to the social media phenomenon that is the worldwide Watch Fam. That model, developed closely with our friends at Fratello Watches, sold out in record time, and collectors everywhere waited with baited breath to see if there would be a follow up.
Omega didn't disappoint, unveiling the Speedmaster Ultraman limited edition a year later.
This colorful and playful chronograph pays homage to classic era Speedmaster design, including an applied Omega logo at 12:00, 'exotic' colored plots on the dial and the special orange chronograph seconds hand that defined the original model on which it was based.
But Omega took it a step further, obtaining licensing from the original Japanese 'Ultraman' series and including special packaging and accoutrement based on the series that made it famous - not to mention a 'hidden' image on the dial, visible only under ultraviolet light.
This particular example is quite special, being a low serial number (#99!) from a limited edition of 2012 produced. Coming from the original owner—and complete with its full set of boxes, papers, and ephemera -- including a massively cool UV torch -- this is an incredibly cool and fun part of the legend that is the Omega Speedmaster dynasty.
The Story
The Space Race, and its glorious culmination, captivated not just those who engaged in it, but the whole world. In Japan, the fascination with space travel resulted in the creation of a TV series called Ultraman. Spanning from 1966 to 1976, Ultraman was a cultural icon in its home country, and even spawned a sequel, Return of Ultraman, in 1971.
And it was in the Return of Ultraman that a Speedmaster Reference 145.012 appeared with a distinctive orange chronograph seconds hand. The presence of that orange hand generated some controversy among vintage Omega collectors, but thanks to some diligent sleuthing on the part of our friends at Moonwatch Only, we have learned that the “Ultraman” Speedmaster is a genuine article. A comprehensive writeup of the “Ultraman” can be found on their site, but we’ll break it down for you: in June of 1968, a few (around 20) of these Speedmasters were produced in Bienne and sent to various destinations. In determining whether an Ultraman is authentic, the dimensions of that orange hand hold the key. While other Omega chronographs, such as the Chronostop, might have orange hands, none have the exact measurements of the one on the Ultraman.
In 2018, Omega paid homage to the Ultraman of yesteryear with a stunning tribute to both the TV series and the watch, as well as the #SpeedyTuesday phenomenon. As with so many of Omega's recent hits, this 2012 piece limited edition sold out in record time!
