Why We Love it
–Patek Philippe has long been known for its complicated watchmaking, but following the stock market crash of 1929, fewer clients had the means to purchase these high-end timepieces.
After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele. Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, the maison conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century which had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava has become a byword for a simple, time-only dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself.
This example, a Reference 3433, features a crispy 36mm yellow gold stepped case with a domed acrylic crystal, a screw-caseback, and the much-desired ‘PP’-signed crown. Manufactured between 1960 to 1966, approximately 500 examples of the 3433 were produced in all metals. Each housed the important Patek Philippe Calibre 27-460 — a robust, self-winding movement.
Simple and exquisitely elegant, the dial uses a silver backdrop for its applied yellow gold baton indices, a running crosshair seconds display at 6 o’clock, and a matching pencil handset. An engraved caseback that reads “W.E.J. May 15, 1964” only adds to the vintage charm of this timepiece.
Paired to an Analog:Shift Atlantic Blue Saffiano leather strap and accompanied by its original signed, yellow gold pin buckle, this piece is in exceptional condition — which is certainly notable considering the limited number of Ref. 3433 examples that were made over 60 years ago!
This is your chance to own what is truly a masterclass in form and function — don't pass it up!
