Why We Love it
–Patek Philippe has long been known for its complicated watchmaking, but following the stock market crash of 1929, fewer clients had the means to purchase these high-end timepieces.
After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele. Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, the maison conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century which had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava has become a byword for a simple, time-only dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself.
This Calatrava, a Reference 5077P-089, expresses itself quite differently from the simple design principle that governs most of the line, featuring a beautiful hand-laid enamel dial.
Exquisitely decorated using a cloisonné technique, the dial is made in likeness to a blood pheasant’s plumage, showcasing a dynamic spectrum of greens and blues, as well as a plethora of gold accents defining each feather. Accompanied by a matching dauphine handset and an ‘EMAIL’ signature signifying the enamel dial, this piece is an accurate illustration of the maison’s savoir-faire.
Housed in a svelte 38mm platinum case, this piece offers a polished bezel and signed crown, and is powered by Patek’s venerable self-winding Calibre 240 movement — visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback and offering equally stunning Côtes de Genève finishing, and a signed 21K gold micro-rotor.
Fitted to a signed black alligator leather strap with a signed platinum pin buckle, this piece is accompanied by its with its factory ephemera including its inner and outer box set, warranty booklet, leather folio and Certificate of Origin dated January, 2016.
Enamel dials especially are incredibly difficult to produce and stunning artistic expressions such as this 5077P don’t often see the light of day.
A rare bird, indeed...
