Why We Love it
–Few watches have influenced modern dress watch design as profoundly as the Patek Philippe Calatrava.
Introduced in 1932 during the depths of the Great Depression, the Calatrava represented a radical departure for a manufacture better known for complicated pocket watches and grand complications. Under the stewardship of the Stern family, Patek Philippe embraced the emerging principles of Bauhaus design—clean lines, functional beauty, and an absence of unnecessary ornamentation—to create what would become the definitive dress watch.
Nearly a century later, the formula remains remarkably effective.
This particular example, the Reference 5119R, represents one of the most beloved modern interpretations of the Calatrava. Housed in a 36mm rose gold case, it combines classical proportions with one of Patek Philippe's most recognizable signatures: the Clous de Paris hobnail bezel. Delicate, intricate, and unmistakably Patek, it adds just enough texture and visual interest to elevate the watch without compromising its restraint.
The glossy white dial is equally timeless. Printed black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock, and elegant black feuille hands create a composition that feels every bit as refined today as it did decades ago. There are no distractions here—just impeccable balance and proportion.
Turn the watch over, and you'll find the manually wound Caliber 215 PS visible through the sapphire caseback. Slim, beautifully finished, and entirely appropriate for a watch of this character, it's the sort of movement that reminds you why Patek Philippe remains the standard against which all other dress watches are judged.
Fitted to a leather strap with a signed rose gold pin buckle, the 5119R captures everything enthusiasts love about the Calatrava: elegance without ostentation, tradition without nostalgia, and craftsmanship without compromise.
Many watches tell the time. A Calatrava teaches the rest of the industry how it should be done.
If you could only own one traditional dress watch, the Calatrava remains the answer.
