Why We Love it

A perpetual calendar is like a small computer on your wrist.

Think of it this way: Imagine a watch that keeps track of not only the time, but also the date, the day of the week, and the month, tells you whether it’s a leap year or not, and what the current phase of the moon is. Oh, and one more thing — imagine it does all of this mechanically, using springs and gears, and that you only have to adjust it once every century or so. Crazy, right?

Patek has been making such watches since the Second World War, and continues to make some of the most superlative quantieme perpetuelles on the market. This particular example, a Reference 5496P, dating to the 2010s,  and includes a neat retrograde date display that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Housed in a 40mm 18K platinum case with a signed crown, a sapphire crystal, and a polished bezel, it features a champagne dial with applied indices, a matching  ‘dauphine’ handset, a printed, retrograde date display, a moonphase display above 6 o’clock, and day, date, and month apertures.

Powered by the automatic Patek Philippe Calibre 324 S QR movement — which is visible via a sapphire display caseback — it comes paired to a signed, brown alligator leather strap with a signed, platinum deployant clasp.

With its lovely design, interesting dial configuration, and excellent workmanship, this Patek Philippe ‘QP’ is simply a tremendous timepiece — the type that any watch collector would be proud to feature in their collection!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.
