Why We Love it
–Though the famous Calatrava is — for good reason — perhaps the best known of Patek Philippe’s incredible dress watches, there are myriad others that deserve recognition.
From the barrel-shaped Gondolo to the curvaceous Golden Ellipse, these timepieces, though simple in design, beg a closer look for their classic proportions and strict attention to detail. Patek has been producing such wristwatches for roughly a century of its 180-plus years, and shows no signs of slowing down.
This particular piece, a Reference 2496, is loaded with refined details including a 26mm 18K yellow gold case with a Clous de Paris bezel and case flanks, a boxy crystal, angular lugs, a signed crown, and a manual-winding Calibre courtesy of Patek.
Looking more closely, this piece features a special double-signed dial from the storied Venezuelan jewellery retailer, Serpico Y Laino.
Serpico Y Laino was founded in 1925 by two Italian gentleman — Leopoldo Serpico and Vincenzo Laino. Shortly after arriving in Venezuela, Vincenzo Laino, a talented goldsmith in his own right, met Leopoldo Serpico who already had an established jewelry repair shop in the country's capital. It quickly became apparent that Laino's business acumen and experience was exactly what Serpico was searching for, and thus, Serpico Y Laino was born.
Serpico Y Laino became a landmark for all things jewelry and watches in Caracas, Venezuela. Thanks to their esteemed reputation, S&L earned the right to stamp their name alongside the most prestigious watch brands of the time; namely Rolex and Patek Philippe.
In addition to the Serpico Y Laino signature, this piece features applied indices, a small seconds at 6 o'clock, and a matching gold handset set against a white dial that has patinated to a lovely champagne tone. Further more, the caseback bears a correct 'S&L' engraving confirming its origin from South America.
Amazing.
We're absolutely positive that this piece will be gone in a flash, so act now before someone else beats you to it!
