Why We Love it
–In the world of watches, what makes an icon? In our eyes, it’s familiarity.
The Omega Speedmaster, Cartier Tank and Rolex Submariner –– all are easily discernible from across the room regardless of identifying the brand name or logo. It’s their distinct features and recognizable silhouettes that give the watch away instantaneously. Another brand following the same trajectory and known for its own discernible features –– Richard Mille.
In 1999, a nearly 50-year-old watchmaker with decades of experience struck out on his own. His creations would soon change the face of horology forever. Richard Mille’s timepieces have since garnered fame, stirred controversy, and been seen on the wrists of actors, athletes, musicians, and other celebrities around the world. Technologically advanced, highly sophisticated, super limited, and priced like luxury automobiles, these watches are the new face of a revolution that has followed in the brand’s wake. Indeed, the global success of the ‘high-end independents’ can, in part, be directly attributed to the embrace that RM has received over the past two decades by collectors, connoisseurs, and watch lovers around the world.
The company’s first product, the RM001, was a revelation in contemporary watchmaking. Conceptually, this semi-prototype sought to bridge the automotive and horological worlds by incorporating lightweight materials, innovative complications, and a design that spoke as much to the influence of hypercars as it did the history of the Vallée de Joux. Since the resounding success of their inaugural piece, Richard Mille has continued to break the mold and challenge the norm of how a wrist watch should look and more importantly feel on the wrist –– we stress the latter because experiencing a RM’s paper-weight profile in the metal is a completely unique experience unto itself.
All that said, nothing gets us more excited when we see an RM put through its paces –– especially in a professional sports setting. We’re talking on the grid with Charles LeClerc and his RM 61-01, on the tennis court with Rafael Nadal and his RM 27-04, and on the green with Bubba Watson and his RM 038.
Bubba Watson has been partnered up with Richard Mille since 2011, and this particular piece, an RM 055 “All Grey” Boutique Edition, might be the coolest looking Bubba Watson edition we’ve seen yet.
This particular RM055 features a 42.7mm x 49.9mm x 13.05mm tonneau shaped case with a sandblasted Grade 5 titanium caseband and caseback, as well as a sandblasted bezel furnished out of titanium carbide. Incredible detailing is represented through the polished beveling along the bezel’s edges, supporting columns nestled into the case walls and RM’s proprietary 5-pronged screws equally positioned along the case face. This RM055 features a curved sapphire crystal, sapphire caseback, rubberized crown and a grey, louvered rubber strap with a signed spring-loaded titanium deployment clasp.
The skeletonized dial depth is a feast for the eyes. Firstly, a tonneau-shaped, black chapter ring sits around the dial periphery, denoting that this particular RM is in fact a Boutique Edition limited to only 50 pieces, as opposed to the Limited Edition which has a grey dial periphery and limited to 100 pieces, respectively. The movement here, a manual-winding Richard Mille Calibre RMUL2 is suspended by 4 braided-steel cables secured to the movement’s baseplate, another RM design signature and is accompanied by luminous hour markers and a matching skeletonized handset.
There are wildly-out-there Richard Mille’s, and then there are more under-the-radar, restrained if you will, examples. This one is the latter. We can’t guarantee that you’ll shoot under a 70 with this on the wrist, but you’ll look pretty damn good doing it.
