Why We Love it

Why We Love It

“What’s the Deal with Rolex Prices!?” If you close your eyes you can almost imagine Seinfeld saying. We hear you. As the prices of Submariners, GMTs, and even Explorers continue to rise higher and higher what’s a collector to do? Well allow us to re-introduce you to the Explorer II Ref. 16570 with Polar White Dial.

A full-size sport Rolex with GMT function, and legitimate brand heritage – really! While early Explorer II’s have skyrocketed due to alleged connections to Steve McQueen the reference 16570 has been overlooked. The somewhat crowded design of early Explorer II dials was cleaned up and re introduced in 1989 and was not changed until 2011 – which is impressive continuity.

The 16570 also comes equipped with the Rolex caliber 3185 with hacking hour hands and seconds – a real charm not found on earlier models.

Like we said, A full-size sport Rolex with GMT function, and legitimate brand heritage – and all for a lot less than $10k. What’s not to love.

The Story

The Explorer line traces its origins to the famous mountain and Sir Edmund Hillary's successful ascension of it in 1953, but numerous historic moments were marked by the presence of the Explorer and its descendent, the Explorer II. Ed Viesturs, the only American to climb all 14 of the globe's eight-thousand peaks (and the fifth person to ever do so without supplemental oxygen); Jean Troillet, the Swiss/Canadian who set the speed record for climbing the Matterhorn (at 21-years-old nonetheless) and was the first person to snowboard down Everest; and Alain Hubert, world-renowned Polar explorer who achieved a world-record cross of the Antarctic continent, all proudly wore the Rolex Explorer II on their expeditions.
