Why We Love it
–Oyster. Precision.
Independently, there’s nothing about the words that scream “watches.” But together on a watch dial, they mean one thing. And that is—Rolex.
The creation of the Rolex Oyster case was the culmination of ten years of development and a lifetime of one man’s singular quest to produce the world’s most waterproof watch. Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex, was shelling oysters at a dinner party when the idea of a watch case came to him. Why couldn’t a watch case, he wondered, be as watertight as the shell of these oysters?
It had been a question that puzzled watchmakers for years—perhaps centuries—but Wilsdorf’s design was the first. The Oyster case became the bedrock upon which all Rolex watches would be built. From the diminutive yet beautiful examples of the 1940s to the robust and substantial watches of today, all of Rolex’s sports watches would have an Oyster case.
Alongside the development of a waterproof wristwatch was Rolex’s quest to create an automatic movement. While many watches were fitted with Perpetual movements, Rolex still released manually-wound watches. Lacking the added costliness of an automatic movement, these watches were affordable watches in an era when owning a Swiss watch was a privilege.
Sacrificing nothing in terms of lineage, they present a value proposition that’s hard to argue with even today.
With timeless styling and perfect proportions, the Oyster Precision is, quite simply, one of the most wearable and versatile watches ever designed. This particular model is an Oyster Precision Reference 6294. It features a classic steel Oyster case, compact at 34mm but sacrificing nothing in terms of durability.
The dial design is often referred to as a “pre-Explorer” due to its similarity to watches worn by members of Sir John Hunt’s 1953 expedition of Mount Everest. However, those watches were powered by the automatic movements rather than the manual movement that powers this watch. Nevertheless, the off-white dial with its unusual honeycomb texture was one that Rolex often used in early years, even on Submariners.
The added benefit of a date (with a roulette, or alternating red-and-white date wheel) gives the Reference 6294 versatility, making it imminently suited for daily wear.
