Why We Love it

Why We Love It

There is no doubt that vintage dive watches hold a special place in the hearts of many collectors, ourselves included.

With their simple, clean designs and reliable, robust movements, the aquatically-oriented tool watches of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were built to accompany the adventurous across the globe. Their mandate was to keep time reliably and without incident, even in the darkest depths.

This particular watch, a Sandoz Depthmaster 1000, was introduced to the world in 1963 with an ad campaign that triumphantly declared it to be "probably the most waterproof watch." Whatever the veracity of that statement, the 1000m depth rating wouldn't be surpassed until Rolex released the Sea-Dweller in 1967. This was without question a tool watch ahead of its time.

The Depthmaster is in a class of watches produced by a number of manufacturers including Nivada, Alpha, Le Phare, LeCoultre and others, and are commonly referred to as "Baby Panerais", due to the obvious similarities in case design. However, at 37.5mm, they are infinitely more wearable and subtle than their Italian cousins, and are far more suitable for smaller wrists.

Powered by a formidable A. Schild Calibre 1712 automatic winding movement, this beautiful old diver not only harkens back to an era of exploring marine frontiers, but also offers a great value with the classic dive watch formula- a stark, legible dial, rotating dive-timing bezel, luminous hands, screw-down crown, and -- of course -- a no frills, bomb-proof case!
