Why We Love it
–Are you a 007 fan?
Then pay attention, because if you can’t get your hands on a “Big Crown” Submariner or a Seamaster equipped with a laser, this may be the next best thing: In 2020 Swatch released a series of watches called the Swatch X 007 Tribute Collection, inspired by classic James Bond films. Fun, lightweight and affordable, they’re an enjoyable entry point into 007-themed watch collecting that need not bankrupt the collector.
Each watch in the lineup features a plastic case, a quartz movement, and a matching rubber strap. Perfect for everyday wear or — if you’re a serious collector — for hoarding, these are the kinds of entry-level, battery-powered watches we can get behind.
The On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Swatch that we have here is inspired by George Lazenby’s singular turn as 007 in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It features a 41mm plastic case, a plastic crystal, an unsigned crown, and a stylized “OHMSS” dial with a green hour hand, a red minute hand, and a day-date display. (Playfully, for each date with a “7” in it, the date display reveals the “007” logo. Cool!) It comes paired to a matching rubber, stylized “OHMSS” strap with a plastic, signed pin buckle.
In near-mint, complete condition with its ephemera, this James Bond-inspired Swatch is perfect for the 007 devotee.
Don’t sleep on this one!
Brand Story
+
Brand Story
+Founded in Biel, Switzerland by Ernst Thomke, Elmar Mock and Jacques Müller, the brand’s name is a contraction of “second watch,” indicating the idea of a casual accessory. Affordable pricing, skilled marketing and fun and colorful designs ensured Swatch’s success, leading to unparalleled sales and proliferation of quartz-powered Swiss watches throughout the world. In 1985, Lebanese entrepreneur Nicolas G. Hayek acquired the majority of Swatch shares with a group of Swiss inventors and subsequently built it into a horological (and fashion) powerhouse.
In 2013, Swatch launched the SISTEM51, a line of automatic watches, and the brand’s first foray into mechanical watchmaking. Produced entirely by machine and consisting of just 51 parts, these movements have ensured Swatch’s appreciation by the ever-growing new guard of mechanical watchmaking aficionados.
