Why We Love it
–Tudor is a brand that needs no introduction. The little brother of Rolex has stepped out of the shadow of its parent company in ways that founder Hans Wilsdorf could not have imagined. But one thing that Wilsdorf set out to do with Tudor was offer Rolex quality at a more affordable price point.
And yet one never feels like one is buying an inferior product when one buys a Tudor—even if it’s slightly smaller.
The market for ladies’ watches is, we feel, a trifle perplexing. So many brands think that all women want a watch that’s gold-plated and diamond encrusted, like those (admittedly gorgeous) cocktail watches our grandmothers used to wear. But one needs only to glance at the wrist of any woman at a watch get-together to see that, chances are, she’ll probably be sporting a men’s watch.
Yet there are brands like Tudor and Rolex that really seem to get their smaller-wristed clientele, offering watches that are simply scaled-down versions of their most popular men’s models.
Take this watch, for instance, a Reference 73090 Tudor Submariner.
First released in the 1980s and discontinued in the 1990s, the Reference 73090 is essentially the little sibling of the ever-popular Reference 79090. As the last generation of Tudor Sub, the Reference 79090 marked a return to the model’s early years. Gone were the triangular indices and hands of the previous “Snowflake” references—the Mercedes hands were back, as were round hour plots interspersed with long triangles at the poles.
Tudor offered this new Submariner in four sizes: the standard 40mm (Reference 79090), 36mm (Reference 75090), 32mm—featured here—and 28mm (the “Lady Sub”).
At 32mm the Mini-Sub is the perfect choice for the smaller-wristed individual for whom 40mm is too large, and 28mm is too small.
With a steel case and a robust ETA movement, this watch is a solid diver—despite its size!
