Why We Love it
–Sometimes we find a watch that is so rare, it’s hard to say much more about it than “nice fucking watch." This 1960s Ulysse Nardin dive watch is one of those cases.
Here’s what we know: Ulysse Nardin is one of the oldest watch brands - operations began in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland - having been in just about continual operation under different ownerships since it was minted. Today, Ulysse Nardin produces a watches ranging from uncomplicated sports watches to ultra-complicated haute horology, and it’s one of those off-the-beaten-path brands that manages to maintain a quiet, tasteful presence while building a troop of devoted collectors.
This Caliber N74 diver watch shares many stylistic attributes with other divers of the era: The clean black dial, dive bezel and angled lugs make this the kind of classically-styled sports watch that looks good in any decade.
Most vintage Ulysse Nardins that we come across are simple dress watches, but a dive watch from the historical marquee is a true rarity. In fact, we haven’t come across another since one was featured on HODINKEE in 2013.
We know how popular this style of vintage sports watches is right now, and this Ulysse Nardin represents a tremendous value in the category. For a watch from great Swiss brand that looks this good, it’s hard to go wrong!
