Why We Love it

You’re looking at one of Gérald Genta’s first notable watch designs.

That’s right — before he put pen to paper and created the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe, the young Swiss designer made the White Shadow for Universal Genève. Elegant and comfortable, it’s one of the more interesting vintage dress watch designs both from an aesthetic and a technical perspective.

Thanks to its record-breaking, slim automatic movement, the White Shadow is a supremely comfortable watch. The cushion shaped case is impressively thin, but it’s also wide enough to feel substantial. UG produced this model in several configurations, but this particular example has to be one of the handsomest we’ve seen.

Dating to the 1970s, it features a 35mm stainless steel case, a signed crown, an acrylic crystal, a matching stainless steel bracelet with a signed UG clasp, and a grey sunburst dial with applied white baton indices and a matching white stick handset. What’s more, it’s powered by the Universal Genève Cal. 2-66 automatic movement with micro-rotor, and even comes with its case back sticker.

There are lots of great affordable dress watches out there, but few can match the White Shadow’s pedigree.

It’s elegant, innovative and unusual — quite the combination!

Brand Story

+
Universal Genève was founded in 1894 by Numa-Emile Descombes and Ulysse George Perret.
In the brand's earliest days, it established itself as a manufacturer of in-house movements of exceptional quality. Universal Genève was also among the first watch manufactures to specialize in wristwatches. In 1897, Louis Eduoard Berthoud — noted designer of complicated watch movements — joined the company. His involvement ensured Universal Genève's supremacy in the development of complicated watches in the 20th Century.
It was under Berthoud's leadership that the brand's reputation as a producer of chronographs was solidified. Chronographs, in particular — namely the Compur and the Compax lines — attracted the attention of watch aficionados, aviators, and militaries around the world. Even the Royal Family of the Netherlands issued a royal charter for Universal Genève to outfit the Dutch military with its chronographs.
Universal Genève was also once responsible for some of the most beautiful dress and time-only watches of the mid-20th century. From the purpose-driven Polerouter to the ornate Cabriolet, UG had a touch all its own and breathed incredible beauty and craftsmanship into every piece they produced. Although the brand is currently dormant, there is tremendous interest in collector circles for vintage models, and is regarded very highly by horological historians and design enthusiasts alike.
