Why We Love it

Why We Love It

Complex and sophisticated, triple calendar chronographs can also be just plain cool. While we might lust after a Patek Philippe Reference 5270, this triple calendar by Wakmann proves that a watch doesn’t have to be fancy to be an impressive piece of horological wizardry. Moreover, it’s definitely more affordable.

The one that we offer here is a Reference 1309. The 37mm case is sharp and comfortable on the wrist, and the cigarette hands echo the sharpness of the case. Splashes of color like that red chronograph hand tie the dial together in a way that makes it really pop.

And the Valjoux 723 movement, a variant of the famous Valjoux 72, packs a punch, making this a robust daily wearer that you won’t want to take off.

The Story

Faced with strictures and tariffs on Swiss watches in the 1930s, many Swiss brands entered into agreements with U.S.-based companies to import their products. In many cases, the watches would be sent in pieces to the distributors’ headquarters for assembly and retail. Breitling entered such an agreement with Wakmann in the 1940s, which would last until the 1970s.

The brand often utilized Breitling's supply chain of high grade components, but retailed their branded watches with entry level price points. Some of the most desirable and enduring models during this period are triple calendar chronographs. Breitling had released its first triple calendar chronograph, the Datora, in the 1940s; however, those watches were mostly crafted in 18k gold, while the versions of the 1960s were cased in steel.

Powered by Valjoux movements, these triple calendar chronographs are without a doubt some of Wakmann’s most popular offerings. They combine sporty appeal with technical precision, and a sprightly black-on-white color scheme ensures their enduring popularity. While you may not, as the poet says, be able to “hold infinity in the palm of your hand,” you can certainly wear it on your wrist.
