Why We Love it

Nobody does complicated watchmaking quite like Patek Philippe.

From chronographs to calendars to minute repeaters, Patek has always led the pack. In fact, the maison was the very first to release a serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph and invented the annual calendar. Quite the pedigree!

This piece, a Reference 5085/1J-012, stands out for its oddball combination of attributes that only Patek could combine into a cohesive whole. Housed within a nearly perfect 37mm 18K yellow gold case with a beautifully tapered integrated bracelet, it features a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, and a polished bezel.

Its anthracite 'sunburst' dial features printed Arabic indices, an outer ‘railroad’ minute track with block-shaped luminous plots and a luminous stick handset. If you’re a fan of vintage military watches, you’ll recognize these crisply contrasting dial attributes right away!

Patek has cleverly combined these distinctly utilitarian design features with a complicated movement. Their self-winding Calibre 240 PS IRM C LU — which incorporates a micro-rotor mechanism and beautifully finished plated with Côtes de Genève visible through a sapphire caseback — powers a running seconds totalizer at 4 o’clock, a combination moon phase and date display at 7 o’clock, and a power reserve indicator between 10 and 11 o’clock.

While its more famous siblings, the Nautilus and Aquanaut, have ascended to heights that remain unreachable for most, the Neptune remains largely overlooked. This example includes its signed leather folio and Certificate of Origin dating to 2008.

Recognizable across the room only to those that know its fantastic integrated bracelet design, this unusual, complicated neo-vintage design from Patek is perfect for the discerning collector who wants a truly special piece that flies under the radar and offers a tremendous value!

Brand Story

+
Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. Few international luxury brands carry the gravitas of their name, and for good reason. The firm's commitment to excellence in horological manufacture is unflinching, and their track record of innovation in design without peer. They continue to lead the industry, and even their fiercest competitors have nothing but the utmost respect for the company.

From the simple elegance of their Calatrava line to the stunning study in miniaturization that is reference 1518 perpetual calendar to the modern reference 5750P chiming watch, Patek’s catalog is chock full of some of the most elegant and complicated timepieces ever made. Family-owned and completely independent, the firm has the freedom to do what it wants — such as discontinue one of the world’s most beloved steel luxury sport watches, the reference 5711 — when it wants.

Owning a Patek Philippe is for many the ultimate goal of timepiece collecting, and for a certain type, the only timepieces they collect. Whichever way you look at it, there is no questioning the elegance of design, superlative manufacture of their cases and movements, or the sheer elegance and emotion that comes from owning one.

Of course for a brand that is steeped in heritage, we are told “You never actually own a Patek Philippe…”

Well, you know the rest.
