Why We Love it

Tudor’s legacy as maker of high-quality tool watches was cemented long before the brand re-entered the American market in late 2013.

The manufacture’s decision to tap its heritage designs when iterating its new collection has gone a long way toward creating fresh Tudor devotees and frankly, a darling amongst the enthusiast community. Whether it’s the Heritage Chrono inspired by the 1970s ‘Monte Carlo’ chronograph, or more recent examples such as the Black Bay 54, Tudor FXD and Pelagos 39, Tudor’s modern lineup is a love letter to some of the very best sports watches of all time.

The Black Bay 58 925 was a polarizing release when it debuted at Watches & Wonders in 2021. Harboring all the signature design cues of their flagship diver, it housed a 39mm case with a domed sapphire crystal, a ‘rose’ signed screw-down crown and of course, the hallmark ‘snowflake’ handset.

But here’s the kicker. The BB58 925 was encased in silver — a peculiar choice of case metal for a diver, which frankly, makes it an odd-duckling and in our eyes, absolutely cool.

This piece, a Reference M79470-0001, features a 925 silver case construction. Now the 925 refers to 92.5%, as in the amount of solid silver used in the case alloy. The remaining 7.5% is an amalgam of other materials that Tudor has yet to disclose, but have touted their secret silver alloy as ‘non-tarnishing’. We love patina as much as the next vintage enthusiast so either way, we’re still on board with the idea!

The luminous grey dial is paired with a tone matching aluminum bezel with hash marks between the zero and fifteen markers. And just when you though this piece couldn't get any more contrasting, this particular 58 features a sapphire exhibition caseback — a trait that has only been seen in precious metal 58's thus far.

Outfitted with a signed, black leather strap with a matching 925 silver, signed pin buckle, this piece is powered by Tudor's workhorse in the self-winding, COSC-certified Calibre MT5400.

Everything about the Black Bay 58 925 feels special. While it may fit the bill as a unique complementary dive watch for someone who owns a Submariner, Seamaster or a traditional steel Black Bay 58, this piece could also be a budding enthusiast's first Tudor — and an interesting one at that!

You already know the advice we're going to give. Snag this 58 and be different!

Brand Story

+
Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf created Tudor in 1926 for the everyman — for miners, construction workers and all sorts of tradesmen. For your everyday person Rolex was sometimes — and is now more so than ever — out of reach. It was meant for the explorer and the businessman, whereas Tudor was to be a different creature entirely.

In creating Tudor, Wilsdorf wanted to offer “a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous.”

Tudors were in many ways Rolexes in all but name, with the same waterproof Oyster cases and similar styling. However, in order to keep costs down, the brand used off-the-shelf Swiss movements rather than their own in-house calibres. What resulted were watches that were more affordable than Rolexes to the consumer, but still uniformly tough and reliable.

Today Tudor has certainly defeated any impression of being the redheaded stepchild of the Rolex family, and their current timepiece collection — as well as their vintage counterparts — are getting the recognition and respect they most rightfully deserve. From the colorful “Home Plate” chronograph to the complicated Advisor, these models often picked up where Rolex left off, daring to be more bold and playful in their design. And now that the brand has introduced in-house movements while still managing to keep pricing modest, the company is better poised than ever to win the hearts and minds of millions of new watch enthusiasts.
