1965 Pan Am “The Jet is Fairly Common”

For much of the 20th century, Pan American Airways was the international air carrier, an innovative airline that was the first to fly worldwide routes, utilize jet aircraft, and upgrade to computerized reservation systems. From its humble beginnings in Florida in 1927 through to its dissolution in 1991, Pan Am captured the American imagination, and indeed, the imagination of early international travelers the world over.

This 1965 full-color advertisement perfectly conveys the glitz and glamor of an international Pan Am route, depicting a Boeing-made Pan Am jet airliner and emphasizing the importance of the airline in question, rather than the equipment being flown. Highly saturated, beautiful, and prominently including Pan Am’s iconic blue globe logo, the image is accompanied by text depicting statistics which, at the time, represented an airline on top of the world: 17 American departure points and 83 destinations around the world.

This particular ad from Ad Patina is custom framed in a 13” x 16” solid wood frame with a walnut painted finish. It features a custom-measured, hand-cut 4-ply border in a shade of white, complimenting all the ad tones. Every material used is acid-free and the glass is anti-reflective and offers UV-protection to keep this precious ad preserved no matter where you decide to hang it up. Speaking of which, hanging your newly purchased ad is a seamless task, as this particular frame comes with an additional hanging wire and felt pads for wall protection.

For watch lovers, Pan Am has a further important association — with the Rolex GMT Master, a watch designed specially for its air crews. Watch lovers will appreciate that this ad is “double signed”: “Boeing,” the famous airplane manufacturer, is painted on the plane’s fuselage. The company’s products included the 707, which helped the “Jet Age” take off, and brought the possibility of international travel to millions of people around the world.
