The Eberhard Scafograf

The 1950s saw the dawn of the age of recreational SCUBA diving. No longer the sole purview of frogmen and specialists, the joy of underwater exploration was now available to all and sundry. All one needed was a bit of equipment, a few hours of training — and a good watch.

In 1958, Eberhard debuted the Scafograf 100. While this early model lacked a rotating dive bezel and was water resistant to just 100m, its sequel, the Scafograf 200, added the now-common rotating bezel and increased the water resistance rating to 200m. With only 200 examples built, it's a rare timepiece indeed, and an important, early model in the development of the now-common automatic diver.

Dating to 1962, this early Scafograf ad for the Italian market promises a watch "ideal for intrepid underwater hunters and all who are passionate for underwater sport." Executed in black and white, it depicts the watch cleverly aligned next to the 200m marking on a depth chart.

This ad is custom framed in a 13 5/8” x 16” natural wood frame with a grey stained finish. It features a custom-measured, hand-cut 4-ply matte in white, complimenting all the ad tones. Every material used is acid-free and the glass is anti-reflective and offers UV-protection to keep this precious ad preserved no matter where you decide to hang it up. Speaking of which, hanging your newly purchased ad is a seamless task, as this particular frame comes with an additional hanging wire and felt pads for wall protection.

While it might not boast the cachet of the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Seamaster, the Eberhard Scafograf is nevertheless a significant and early step in the history of the dive watch. This straightforward ad — with its clever layout, simple copy, and beautiful photography — captures its essence perfectly.
