Details

Sure, Analog:Shift is a business built around the love of watches — mostly mechanical watches.

But, in essence, it’s our love for timepieces and timekeeping in general that are the common themes throughout the items we procure. And that includes the love of clocks in general: pocket watches, travel clocks, and more.

After all, in the couple hundred years before the First World War, personal timekeeping was all about the pocket watch, and before that, it was larger clocks that were front and center, horologically. We still believe a good clock deserves a place in any watch lover’s collection.

The Super Autavia features a combination clock and chronograph mechanism with a 30-minute counter on the dial and a 12-hour timing bezel, allowing a user to record events up to 12 hours with accuracy, even while behind the wheel. Whether used for rally or endurance events or in the cockpit of an aircraft, these exquisitely crafted instruments were introduced in 1958 and many survive to this day, seeing second lives as cherry-on-top display instrumentation in a thriving collector car market.

This particular Super Autavia, however, is more than merely super - it is properly special! In incredible preserved condition, this is a very early Mark I version - the earliest execution of the model, with a host of nuanced details that set it apart - and arguably above those that came later. Powered by a Valjoux 76 mechanical chronograph movement, this example is made even more desirable by the presence of a secondary signature on the dial - that of Abercrombie & Fitch Co - signaling that it was originally ordered and retailed by the legendary New York City based outfitter.

Incredible.

Its 55mm sports features an easily gripped, textured bidirectional bezel with a 12-hour graduated scale with relief engraving, an acrylic crystal and a large knurled winding crown with chronograph activator button at 12 o’clock. A chrono reset pusher flanks the crown at the 1 o'clock position. The matte black luminous dial features thin luminous stick indices and a matching handset with orange tipped hour hand and center chronograph hand. A white hand runs continually in the subsidiary seconds register at the 6 o'clock position, also home to 'Super Autavia' and 'Heuer' model and logo placement. A 30-minute counter lives at the 12 o'clock position on the dial, indicated with an orange painted indicator hand.

The timer is mounted on a steel plate with drilled screw holes allowing for easy installation into your vehicle. Plate measures approximately 2 1/2“ x 2 1/2“ and is signed ‘Ed Heuer & Co Swiss'.

This collector-grade dash is in exceptional condition throughout, near mint with light even patination to the luminous indices and handset. It also comes complete with its original signed box. This very special early Heuer Super Autavia Mark I is an absolute time capsule!

This piece is without question one of the earliest, rarest and most desirable Heuer dash clock/chronographs available - anywhere! If you've got a collector vehicle from the late 1950s/early 1960s, this special instrument belongs mounted on its dash!
