2013 Paul Newman Portrait Imagery

There is perhaps no more well regarded celebrity representing the Rolex ethos than the late American actor and auto race driver Paul Newman. Though he wasn’t an official “brand ambassador” by the modern definition of the term, Newman’s proclivity to sport a Cosmograph Daytona given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward has forever associated him with the famed racing watch — and in particular, with the “exotic dial” variant that has since become known as the “Paul Newman Daytona.”

Seen here in this tremendous photograph is Newman from his racing days wearing the Daytona reference 6239 that now carries his name. Newman’s particular watch — with its touching casebacking engraving reading “DRIVE CAREFULLY, ME” — famously hit the auction block in 2017, hammering for a cool $17M and change. If “Paul Newman” Daytonas were hot before then, this auction changed the face of Daytona collecting forever, exposing a new generation to the mesmerizing power of this legendary actor, driver, and philanthropist — the type of old-school star who has largely been lost to time.

This intimate portrait, taken by Al Satterwhite in 1978, needs more than the proverbial 1,000 words to articulate both its magnitude and the influence Paul Newman has had on watch collecting — all the more so due to the actor’s love affair with cars. Carefully removed from the pages of a 2013 publication, it’s the perfect complement to a well kitted-out office or garage.
