Why We Love it
–Tudor's legacy as maker of high-quality tool watches was cemented long before the brand re-entered the American market in late 2013.
The firm's decision to tap its heritage when designing its new collection has gone a long way toward creating fresh Tudor devotees, making it a darling amongst the enthusiast community. Whether it’s the Heritage Chrono inspired by the 1970s ‘Monte Carlo’ chronograph or more recent examples such as the Black Bay 54 and Pelagos 39, Tudor’s modern lineup is a love letter to some of the very best sports watches of all time.
Far from being dubbed an "instant classic," the Black Bay P01 was a polarizing release when it debuted at the final Baselworld in 2019. While many stood back and gawked at what was clearly a different watch, a handful of individuals understood what Tudor was trying to do: The P01 was bold, daring, and a breath of fresh air.
This piece, a Reference 70150 based on a military prototype from the 1960s that was never put into production, features a robust 42mm stainless steel case with a rotating, 12-hour steel bezel equipped with a patented, locking design. A Tudor-shield signed crown positioned at 4 o’clock, a domed sapphire crystal, and a hinged-lug system fed by a leather strap with a signed, deployant clasp round out the feature set.
The luminous black dial lends itself to the Black Bay’s traditional aesthetics, with a combination of circular hour plots, baton quadrant indices, and a matching ‘snowflake’ handset. The P01 is powered by the self-winding Calibre MT5612, the first ever in-house calibre manufactured by Tudor.
In outstanding condition, this unorthodox diver delivers the quality and accuracy you'd expect from one of the best brands in the watch business — plus a healthy dose of welcome funkiness, to boot!
Brand Story

Brand Story
+In creating Tudor, Wilsdorf wanted to offer “a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous.”
Tudors were in many ways Rolexes in all but name, with the same waterproof Oyster cases and similar styling. However, in order to keep costs down, the brand used off-the-shelf Swiss movements rather than their own in-house calibres. What resulted were watches that were more affordable than Rolexes to the consumer, but still uniformly tough and reliable.
Today Tudor has certainly defeated any impression of being the redheaded stepchild of the Rolex family, and their current timepiece collection — as well as their vintage counterparts — are getting the recognition and respect they most rightfully deserve. From the colorful “Home Plate” chronograph to the complicated Advisor, these models often picked up where Rolex left off, daring to be more bold and playful in their design. And now that the brand has introduced in-house movements while still managing to keep pricing modest, the company is better poised than ever to win the hearts and minds of millions of new watch enthusiasts.
