Why We Love it

The Rolex Day-Date is in many ways the perfect dress watch. It’s undeniably beautiful, but sturdy enough to wear every day, and versatile enough to be worn on a bracelet or a strap (with Rolex buckle, naturally). For the longest time it was Rolex’s only complicated wristwatch in continuous production (until the launch of the Daytona in the 1960s); the Day-Date is the Crown’s crown jewel.

But for those of us who prefer something sportier, a touch larger, and in steel, but with the same look and feel as the Day-Date… we’re sorry to say that it doesn’t exist—or, at least, Rolex doesn’t make it.

Fortunately for us, Tudor did.

The Reference 7020/0 Tudor Oyster Prince Day Date was only made for a few years between the late '60s and early '70s. With a very small production run, examples turn up infrequently on the market. In the past few years, we've been able to locate only a handful, which have found homes almost as soon as we laid our hands on them.

When it comes to characteristics, there's nothing not to love about this watch. The steel Oyster Case—as large as a Submariner, at 40mm—gives it a distinctly masculine feel. The day wheel at 12:00 ensures this won't be confused with a Datejust or Prince Oysterdate, while the addition of a steel rotating "Turn-O-Graph"-style bezel provides an unmistakable sport element.

On paper, the Reference 7020/0 has all of our favorite things, but on the wrist, it’s even better. Though the case proportions are on the larger size for the era, it’s not as bulky as its Rolex-branded counterparts. The ETA movement ensures that the watch wears considerably thinner, making it ideal for daily use and wear.

This particular piece possesses a crisp case with superb lugs and a brilliant blue sunburst dial with light even patina. On a black leather strap, it exudes a refined air, but its solid proportions would lend themselves well to a NATO. For something that’s truly unique, but with a name and a quality you can trust, it’s simply not to be beat.
